Meghalaya to finalise on vehicle scrappage policy in this year: Dhar

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday said Meghalaya is in the
process of finalising its Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2025, with implementation expected within this year.
Dhar said the policy framework is being worked out and details on the number of vehicles to be scrapped
will be made public once the process is complete.

“We are in the process of doing it, it will take time. When the process is finalised and in place then
everything will be known to you, how many vehicles, this year vehicles will be scrapped, so this year we
are in the process of finalising,” Dhar said.

He added that the department needs more time to put the system in place, but expects rollout before the
year ends.“It will take a little bit of time, and according to me by this year we should be able to implement
it,” the deputy CM stated.

The Vehicle Scrappage Policy is aimed at phasing out old, unfit, and polluting vehicles from roads. Once
implemented, it is expected to set criteria and timelines for de-registering and dismantling end-of-life
vehicles, in line with the Centre’s national scrappage guidelines.

Transport officials said the state is currently working on infrastructure, authorised scrapping centres, and
procedures for incentives and certificates of deposit before the policy comes into effect.
