Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s 37th Test captain

May 24, senior selection committee meeting in Mumbai, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Indian cricketer Shubman Gill has been appointed the 37th Test captain. To select a xx-man team for the five-test series against England, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar convened at the board headquarters. Headingley hosted the start of the series on June 20. Gill replaces Rohit Sharma, who departed Test cricket in May. Gill was selected before Jasprit Bumrah, who had already led India in three Test matches, including two during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy without Rohit. One of the youngest players to occupy the role was 25-year-old Gill in 2024. In Zimbabwe, he led India in a five-match Twenty20 International despite having no prior captaincy experience. In 32 Test matches, Gill has amassed 1,893 runs, including five hundreds, and was selected as captain for the forthcoming England Tests.
