Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, has commenced a high-profile, three-day official visit to Meghalaya. The primary objective of this tour is to comprehensively review the state’s logistical and infrastructural preparedness for hosting the upcoming 39th National Games, scheduled for next year.
During this crucial visit, Minister Mandaviya will chair a high-level review meeting alongside Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and State Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri. A major highlight of the tour will be the formal signing of the Host State Contract for the multi-sport event, executed in the presence of senior dignitaries and key representatives from the Indian Olympic Association.
In a significant boost to regional athletics, Mandaviya will also inaugurate the newly constructed, state-of-the-art Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex in Shillong. Built at an estimated cost of ₹132.9 crore, this modern, multi-functional facility is meticulously designed to host major indoor disciplines like basketball, badminton, and volleyball, positioning it as a cornerstone venue for the upcoming Games.
Beyond the immediate scope of the National Games, the Union Minister’s itinerary features an extensive evaluation of ongoing developmental projects across the state. He is scheduled to inspect the aquatics and tennis facilities at the Umsawli Sports Complex, participate in a departmental ‘Chintan Shivir’ focused on youth empowerment, and travel to the Ri-Bhoi district to review the on-ground execution of centrally sponsored welfare schemes. This visit strongly underscores the Central Government’s firm commitment to accelerating holistic sports infrastructure and youth development across India’s Northeastern region.
