
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse on Thursday announced a plan set up a high-altitude training center in Meghalaya under the Khelo India Mission. The Union Minister made the announcement during a visit to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), NEHU center in Shillong and interacted with athletes, coaches, and officials on Thursday. “From reviewing the Field of Play facilities to trying Indian Round Archery and joining athletes on the football field, it was inspiring to witness the passion and sporting culture of the Northeast firsthand,” the Union Minister stated on social media. “With its pleasant weather, natural beauty, and serene environment, SAI NEHU Shillong holds immense potential to emerge as a premier high-altitude training center for elite athletes preparing for national and international competitions,” Khadse said.
SAI Assistant Director, Rajnish Mishra, Meghalaya Olympic Association working president, John Kharshing, along with coaches, officials and support staff accompanied the Union Minister during the review. The Minister reiterated the Centre’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and athlete development pathways across the Northeast. Notably, the visit comes ahead of Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mahdavia’s three-day visit to Meghalaya, which will be hosting the National Games in early 2027.
