Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, has announced a high-level review meeting next week to critically assess the ongoing construction of the strategically vital Shillong-Dawki Road. The decision follows mounting concerns over frequent landslides that have severely hampered infrastructure work and compromised commuter safety along the corridor.
Acknowledging the persistent logistical challenges, Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong emphasized that the state government is committed to finding comprehensive, long-term solutions to the recurring landslide problem. The upcoming review meeting will bring together key stakeholders to examine current progress and evaluate robust engineering interventions to ensure safer, uninterrupted travel for the public.
The announcement comes on the heels of a crucial meeting in New Delhi between Tynsong and the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). During the high-level deliberation, the Deputy Chief Minister strongly advocated for the immediate deployment of landslide protection measures on a massive scale across the entire highway stretch.
Tynsong stressed that securing the vulnerable slopes is absolutely paramount to safeguarding commuters and maintaining seamless connectivity, especially given the route’s economic and regional importance. The state government intends to closely monitor NHIDCL’s implementation of these protective measures to prevent future disruptions and expedite the completion of the highway project.
