Meghalaya Government’s Cultural Push: Two-Day Lit Fest Prelude Opens in New Delhi

In a significant move to bridge the cultural gap between the Northeast and the national capital, the Government of Meghalaya is set to host a two-day “Delhi Prelude” to the Shillong Literary Festival. The event will take place on May 8 and 9 at the historic Bikaner House, serving as a high-profile curtain-raiser for the main festival scheduled to be held in Meghalaya later this year.

Launched in 2021, the Shillong Literary Festival has rapidly become a premier cultural gathering in the region. By bringing a dedicated edition to New Delhi, organizers aim to amplify the national reach of Northeast voices while promoting tourism through the lenses of literature, arts, and cinema. The two-day program is designed to be a vibrant tapestry of storytelling, focusing on identity, ecology, indigenous traditions, and the evolving food culture of Shillong.

The event features a prestigious lineup of speakers and public intellectuals. A highlight of the prelude will be a featured conversation between Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and veteran journalist Shekhar Gupta. Adding a theatrical flair to the literary discussions, legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah is scheduled to perform a reading from Vikram Seth’s acclaimed work, Beastly Tales From Here and There.

The sessions will dive deep into the heart of the Northeast’s intellectual landscape. Notable participants include Patricia Mukhim, editor of The Shillong Times; award-winning filmmakers Pradip Kurbah and Dominic Sangma; and acclaimed authors such as Shobhaa De and Sanjoy Hazarika. Discussions are expected to center on Khasi and Garo traditions, the nuances of regional literature in translation, and how culture intersects with governance in the modern era.

Beyond the spoken word, the festival will showcase Meghalaya’s “grassroots music initiative” with live performances from local artists, alongside culinary showcases highlighting the unique flavors of the state. Government officials noted that this prelude is part of a broader strategy to position Meghalaya as a top-tier destination for culture-led and experiential tourism. By fostering these dialogues in the capital, the state hopes to invite a wider national audience to experience the magic of Ward’s Lake and the literary spirit of Shillong this coming winter.
