West Shillong Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Paul Lyngdoh was officially sworn in as a cabinet minister in the Meghalaya state government on Monday, November 2, marking his return to the Council of Ministers just days after formally defecting from the United Democratic Party (UDP) to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma officially confirmed the cabinet expansion through a social media statement immediately following the formal oath-taking ceremony, which took place at the official Lok Bhavan premises in the capital city of Shillong. Sharing the administrative update on November 2, Chief Minister Sangma stated that he personally attended the swearing-in ceremony to extend his warm congratulations and best wishes to the newly inducted minister, while expressing strong confidence that Paul Lyngdoh would continue to serve the diverse populace of Meghalaya with unwavering dedication, vision, and governance commitment. Lyngdoh’s high-profile induction directly fills the key ministerial vacancy created by former United Democratic Party president Metbah Lyngdoh, who had earlier tendered his resignation from the state Council of Ministers. The portfolio appointment comes amidst a period of rapid political realignment and structural shifts across Meghalaya’s legislative landscape, triggered by the recent departure of 11 influential legislators from the UDP opposition camp. Out of these breakaway lawmakers, eight prominent leaders formally crossed over to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while Paul Lyngdoh and two other key MLAs chose to throw their political weight behind the ruling NPP platform. The NPP had officially inducted Paul Lyngdoh alongside Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh into the party fold on October 28, when state Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong formally handed over their official party membership certificates during a ceremony at the party headquarters, while Mookaiaw MLA Nujorji Sungoh, who also intended to join the NPP fold, missed the event due to health reasons. Prior to this latest administrative induction, Paul Lyngdoh had previously served the state as Meghalaya’s Tourism Minister, during which he spearheaded multiple high-profile infrastructural initiatives designed to boost regional eco-tourism and state hospitality, including the ambitious Shillong Peak Ropeway project which has recently come under intense legislative scrutiny following structural objections raised by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. His strategic return to the state Cabinet underlines the evolving political dynamics in Meghalaya as major parties consolidate legislative backing ahead of future governance terms.
