UDP withdraws from NPP-led MDA 2.0 govt

The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday decided to withdraw its support from the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) 2.0 Government following an emergent meeting of its Central Executive Committee at the party office.

The decision was taken after hours of deliberations over the departure of 11 UDP MLAs, including eight who joined the BJP and three who defected to the ruling NPP, as well as the resignation of party president and lone remaining MLA Metbah Lyngdoh from the Cabinet.

Talking to reporters after the emergent CEC meeting, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne said the CEC, after hearing views from party leaders and representatives across the state, unanimously decided to ask the party president to withdraw support from the government. The UDP had been part of the NPP led MDA 2.0 coalition government since 2023.
