Senior BJP legislator Alexander Laloo Hek on Tuesday declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party will contest the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections independently, expressing confidence that the party will be in a position to form and lead the next government in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Hek said the BJP has already begun strengthening its organisational network across Meghalaya in preparation for the Assembly polls.
“We will fight the 2028 elections on our own and are confident of leading the next government,” he said, asserting that the party is steadily expanding its political base in the state.
Commenting on the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, Hek disclosed that the BJP had initially approached him to be its candidate. However, he declined the proposal, stating that he wanted to focus on his current responsibilities.
“The party had asked me to contest the by-election, but I informed them that I still have several responsibilities to fulfil. Therefore, I decided not to contest,” he said.
Instead, Hek has recommended the name of fellow BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai for the parliamentary by-election.
“I have proposed Sanbor Shullai’s name. The final decision rests with the party leadership, and we will wholeheartedly support whoever is selected,” he added.
Expressing confidence ahead of the bypoll, Hek said the BJP has enough time to prepare and will mount a strong electoral challenge once its candidate is officially announced.
