Wah Umlew Protection Committee voices concern over deteriorating condition of Umlew River

The Wah Umlew Protection Committee, comprising representatives from nine villages under the Nongtraw area in Ri Bhoi district, has voiced concern over the deteriorating condition of the Umlew River and called on the state government to take urgent steps to safeguard the water body.

The committee alleged that ongoing earth-cutting activities linked to a road construction project being executed by Dhar Construction Company from Nongkohlew to NEIGHRIMS have led to significant pollution of the river.

According to committee members, the Umlew River has been protected and maintained by local communities for decades and remains a vital resource for residents of the surrounding villages, they claimed that the recent excavation work has caused soil and debris to enter the river, affecting its water quality.

Addressing the media, Wah Umlew Protection Committee Secretary Pynskhemlang Sohtun expressed deep concern over the increasing contamination and visible discoloration of the river, stating that the committee has long been engaged in conservation efforts aimed at preserving the river ecosystem and protecting aquatic life.

Sohtun noted that strict measures had been enforced over the years to prevent harmful activities in the river, including the use of poisonous substances, explosives, and other practices that could damage the aquatic environment.

He also said the organization is not opposed to development projects but believes that construction activities must be carried out responsibly, stressing the need for effective safeguards to prevent indiscriminate dumping of excavated soil and other materials into the river.

The committee secretary further revealed that discussions had previously been held with officials of Dhar Construction Company regarding the issue, however no substantial corrective measures have been taken to address the committee’s concerns.

The Wah Umlew Protection Committee has now appealed to the state government to step in and ensure adequate protection of the river, warning that continued pollution could adversely affect the livelihoods and daily needs of residents from the nine villages that depend on its waters.
