Shree Cement Ltd. has reinforced its commitment to sustainable industrial growth by announcing that its upcoming integrated cement manufacturing project in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district will incorporate advanced water stewardship and resource-efficient manufacturing practices, aligning with India’s low-carbon development agenda.
The company said the project will operate on a 100 per cent Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) model, under which industrial wastewater will be treated and fully recycled for cooling, dust suppression and greenbelt development, significantly reducing freshwater consumption. The facility will also deploy energy-efficient technologies and sustainable resource management systems based on circular economy principles from the initial phase of development.
Shree Cement said its nationwide water management framework—covering efficient water use, large-scale rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and complete wastewater recycling—has enabled it to achieve an eight-times water-positive status by replenishing substantially more water than it consumes. The company also plans to strengthen water resilience in communities around the Meghalaya project through conservation and replenishment initiatives. A company spokesperson said the expansion reflects Shree Cement’s commitment to ensuring industrial productivity goes hand in hand with ecological preservation and long-term environmental resilience.
In Shillong, the proposed investment is expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s industrial ecosystem while reinforcing investor confidence in sustainable manufacturing. With demand for environmentally responsible infrastructure rising across the Northeast, industry experts believe the project could improve the state’s attractiveness for future industrial investments, generate employment, support local businesses and accelerate economic development without compromising environmental priorities. The Meghalaya initiative builds on Shree Cement’s ongoing watershed development and groundwater recharge programmes under the MukhyamantriJalSwavalambanAbhiyan (MJSA) in Rajasthan, a community-centric water stewardship model the company intends to replicate across its operational footprint.
