Shree Cement and Vision Spring Foundation bring vision care

Reinforcing its commitment to community healthcare and well-being, Shree Cement Limited, in partnership with VisionSpring Foundation, successfully implemented a comprehensive vision care initiative across East Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya under the See to Earn program. Conducted between May and June 2026, the initiative sought to improve productivity, quality of life and overall well-being by providing accessible vision screening and corrective eyewear services to underserved communities.

The program reached 1,500 beneficiaries, including 742 men and 758 women, reflecting a balanced and inclusive approach to community outreach. Through a series of eye screening camps organised across villages in East Jaintia Hills, residents received access to quality eye care services closer to their homes, reducing the need to travel long distances for diagnosis and treatment.

The initiative covered multiple locations across the district, including Moolansgi, Loomthari, Tongseng, Bomkhosngi, Loomshyrngan, Daistong, Khaidong, Lumbangala, Shnong Thymme and Khliehriat, ensuring extensive geographical coverage and accessibility for local communities. A total of 953 individuals were identified with refractive error and presbyopia, representing nearly 64% of those screened. Of these, 936 individuals (98%) received corrective eyeglasses, while 87 eyeglasses were dispensed immediately on-site, enabling beneficiaries to experience immediate improvements in their daily lives and work.

Significantly, all 936 eyeglass recipients were first-time wearers, highlighting the scale of unmet vision care needs in the region and the program’s role in bridging this gap in access to essential healthcare services.

The program also adopted a holistic approach to eye health by identifying individuals requiring advanced medical intervention. A total of 49 beneficiaries were referred to hospitals for specialised treatment, including 16 suspected cataract cases and 33 individuals diagnosed with other eye conditions requiring further care and evaluation.

“At Shree Cement, we are committed to supporting the health and well-being of the communities around us. Through this vision care initiative, we sought to make essential eye care services more accessible and help individuals lead healthier, safer and more productive lives. We are encouraged by the impact created and remain committed to initiatives that strengthen community well-being and improve quality of life”, said a Shree Cement Spokesperson.

The intervention was designed around the understanding that clear vision directly influences productivity, income generation, safety and educational outcomes. Correcting vision challenges can help individuals work with greater precision and efficiency, improve workplace safety, enhance learning outcomes and enable greater independence in day-to-day activities.

The outreach model included a structured program cycle comprising community registration, awareness and counselling sessions, technical eye screening, referral support and eyeglass dispensing. Alongside clinical interventions, awareness and educational materials were deployed to promote eye health and encourage preventive care within communities.

To maintain program quality and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures, VisionSpring conducted supportive supervision visits as part of its internal quality assurance framework. The project recorded an overall quality score of 84% during the supervision process undertaken in Khaidong village, reflecting strong program implementation and delivery standards.

By partnering with local communities and specialist organisations such as VisionSpring Foundation, Shree Cement seeks to create sustainable and meaningful social impact in and around its areas of operation. The initiative has already begun transforming lives across East Jaintia Hills. Beneficiaries such as Susan Langshing from Lumbangala and Magdalina Ladong from Loomthari reported significant improvements in their ability to carry out everyday activities such as reading, sorting grains and using mobile phones after receiving their first pair of eyeglasses. Both beneficiaries highlighted the convenience of receiving quality eye care services within their communities, saving them considerable time and travel costs.

As part of its continued efforts to strengthen healthcare access in underserved communities, Shree Cement remains committed to supporting interventions that improve health outcomes, enhance productivity and contribute to long-term community well-being across Meghalaya and beyond.
