Scientific Farming Techniques Promoted Among Ri Bhoi Farmers to Combat Climate Challenges

The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ri Bhoi, has conducted a three-day multidisciplinary farmers’ training and El Niño awareness programme at Umdihar village in Ri Bhoi district. The programme aimed to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills in adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices to address the challenges posed by climate change and changing weather patterns.

A total of 45 farmers participated in the training, which focused on the importance of scientific farming techniques, sustainable practices, and climate adaptation strategies. During the inaugural session, experts highlighted the need for integrated approaches in agriculture to minimise the impact of El Niño-related challenges and ensure better productivity.

The training featured expert sessions by Dr. Moloy S. Baruah from Animal Science, Dr. Meghna Sarmah from Agronomy, and Dr. Popiha Bordoloi from Soil Science. Discussions covered the effects of climate change on agriculture, integrated farming systems, sustainable soil health management, and methods to improve farm resilience.

Farmers also took part in practical demonstrations, interactive discussions, and group activities to identify local agricultural challenges and explore suitable solutions. The programme encouraged participants to adopt innovative and sustainable techniques suited to their local conditions.

The initiative reflects ICAR-KVK Ri Bhoi’s continued efforts to empower farmers with scientific knowledge and promote climate-smart agriculture for sustainable livelihoods and improved agricultural outcomes.
