Sangma, Himanta Call for Peace and Restraint After Shillong Unrest

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have agreed to work together to restore peace, trust and normalcy following violence linked to the KSU black-flag bike rally in Shillong. During a phone conversation on Thursday, the two leaders discussed the unrest and its impact on inter-state commuters. They agreed that designated Cabinet Ministers from both states would meet to take forward discussions and help address emerging concerns. Sangma appealed to citizens to remain calm and exercise restraint, highlighting the strong social, economic and familial ties between Assam and Meghalaya. Sarma described the two states as “sister States” and stressed the need for mutual respect and sensitivity. The talks followed protests and blockades at inter-state entry points, along with reports of attacks on Meghalaya-bound vehicles in Assam. Meghalaya Police have also arrested KSU leaders in connection with alleged violence and vandalism during the protests. The two governments are now seeking to prevent further escalation and restore normal movement and confidence between the neighbouring states.
