Only 50 km of Bangladesh border fencing left in Meghalaya: BJP’s Rajiv Babbar

BJP Northeast Joint Coordinator Rajiv Babbar on Wednesday said that only around 50 km of the Bangladesh border fencing in Meghalaya remained incomplete, adding that the pending work was expected to move forward once certain technical issues were resolved.

Speaking to reporters in Shillong, Babbar said the state had made considerable progress in constructing the border fence and maintained that the remaining stretch was being held up due to technical issues.

“We have already constructed the fencing and I think only 50 km is now left. So we have done a good job, and that too in a technical way,” Babbar said.

Drawing a comparison with West Bengal, he referred to the 653-km Bangladesh border in the state and alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee had delayed the fencing work by not providing the required land.

“For the last 15 years, we were requesting Mamata Banerjee ji to give us the land, but she was not giving it. Now the BJP government is there and the new Chief Minister has given the land, and the fencing work has already started,” he said.

Describing the development as an example of the BJP government’s commitment to border security, Babbar said the progress could be verified on the ground.

When asked about the timeline for completing the remaining 50 km of fencing in Meghalaya, he said the government was examining the technical issues before announcing a fresh deadline.

“I think there are certain technical issues which will be resolved. We will give you the next date very soon after understanding the technical issues,” he said.
