Meghalaya’s sporting aspirations have received a significant boost with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art indoor cricket academy in Kurkalang. The facility, designed to provide year-round training and advanced skill development, aims to cultivate young talent and elevate the state’s standing in the national cricketing landscape.
The project was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who conducted the ceremony from Sikkim. The Kurkalang academy is part of a coordinated infrastructure rollout spanning six Northeastern states. The event saw the presence of prominent figures in the cricketing world, including ICC representative Jay Shah and BCCI official Devajit Saikia, highlighting the strategic importance of the region in the broader roadmap for Indian cricket.
During the program, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for rapid execution in infrastructure projects, moving beyond just policy formulation to “acting fast.” This philosophy is now central to the drive for improved sports facilities across the Northeast, ensuring that local athletes have access to professional-grade environments that were previously unavailable.
At the Kurkalang site, the inauguration was attended by members of the Meghalaya Cricket Association, led by President James Sangma, along with district officials and local residents. The enthusiasm from the community underscored the growing interest in structured cricket development in the state. Speaking on the sidelines, James Sangma highlighted the academy’s potential to rectify previous challenges in the state’s cricket ecosystem. He described the facility as a “launch pad” that would help build the necessary foundations for high-level cricket infrastructure in Meghalaya.
Community engagement was a focal point of the day. Members of the Bhoirymbong Dorbar Shnong expressed their support, emphasizing that the academy should serve as more than just a training ground. Everest Nongshli, Assistant Secretary of the Dorbar Shnong, noted that the facility is expected to be instrumental in identifying and nurturing grassroots talent, which will, in turn, benefit the state’s cricket performance at large.
As the academy officially opens its doors, it marks a transformative step for aspiring cricketers in Meghalaya. With the combination of modern infrastructure and a renewed focus on systematic development, the Kurkalang Indoor Cricket Academy is poised to become a cornerstone for nurturing the next generation of sporting talent in the region.
