Mohendro Rapsang joins BJP, says decision driven by Meghalaya’s growth and development

Former legislator Mohendro Rapsang has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that his decision is motivated by a desire to contribute to the growth and development of Meghalaya as well as the nation.

Speaking to reporters after joining the party, Rapsang said his political journey has entered a new chapter following his defeat in the 2023 Assembly elections. He explained that while he had been content with his previous political engagements, he now sees the BJP as a platform through which he can continue serving the people.

“After the 2023 election, where I lost my seat, I reflected on my future in politics. Today, I am joining the BJP for the growth of the state and the nation. That is my aim,” Rapsang said.

Addressing questions about whether joining the BJP would strengthen his prospects in West Shillong, a general constituency, Rapsang expressed confidence that the party’s support base is expanding across communities in Meghalaya.

“Why not? People are starting to vote for the BJP. Even tribals and minorities are supporting the party. I believe the party’s acceptance is growing, and that will benefit us in the future,” he said.

When asked about his electoral ambitions, Rapsang maintained that contesting future elections would depend entirely on the party’s decision. He stressed that his immediate focus would be on strengthening the organisation rather than seeking a ticket.

“Every election is a challenge for anyone who contests. I don’t focus on who joins which party. I will remain committed to the BJP and work for the party. If the party finds me fit to contest in the future, I will do so. I leave that decision to the party leadership,” he added.

Rapsang’s induction is being seen as a significant addition to the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Meghalaya, particularly in urban constituencies such as West Shillong, as political parties gradually begin positioning themselves ahead of the next Assembly elections.
