Meghalaya: SIR begins on East Khasi Hills dist

The East Khasi Hills district administration will begin a month-long house-to-house verification drive from June 30 as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll directed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Barnwal said Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit all 1,021 polling stations across the district to distribute pre-filled self-enumeration forms to voters whose names appear in the 2025 electoral roll. The final revised electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7, 2026

Speaking on the process, Barnwal clarified that electors are not required to submit any documents during the enumeration stage. “The electors are only supposed to deposit their properly filled self-enumeration form. That is all that is required at the stage of the enumeration. We expect that an overwhelming majority of electors will be handled through their enumeration forms only,” he said. He added that only a small fraction of voters may be asked for additional clarification by BLOs, after which they will be given sufficient time to submit supporting documents.

The Deputy Commissioner also assured the public that the administration has instructed BLOs to accept all supporting documents, and not restrict themselves to the ECI’s indicative list of 11 documents. “Whether it is a church certificate or a headman certificate, every document will be collected. The decision on the elector’s case will be taken by the Electoral Registration Officer based on an overall assessment of all the documents submitted,” Barnwal said, stressing that the exercise is aimed at ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral roll.

Appealing to citizens to actively participate, Barnwal urged voters not to be intimidated by the revision exercise. “Please don’t fear. The administration is ready to walk hand-in-hand with you. We would be absolutely okay if you ask us the same question a hundred times, but we would not want to miss any eligible elector,” he said. He reiterated that the objective of the Special Intensive Revision is “to include and not to exclude” and to prepare a clean, error-free and accurate electoral roll. Citizens can also seek assistance through the Election Commission’s 1950 helpline or the district administration’s helpline numbers 0364-2501250 and 0364-2501228.
