Meghalaya Govt scraps Taj Umiam project

The Meghalaya government has announced its decision to shelve the proposed Lumpongdeng project in Ri-Bhoi district following consultations with local traditional leaders. The move comes after a meeting with the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi (SRSRB), a key body representing village heads in the region. Government Spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla conveyed the decision while addressing the media on Monday. He stated that the government arrived at this conclusion after detailed discussions with local stakeholders, particularly those associated with the Umiam project area.

Shylla emphasized that the government is committed to working in consultation with the people and respecting public sentiment. He clarified that there was no attempt to conceal any aspect of the project, adding that all initiatives undertaken by the government are aimed at benefiting the citizens of the state. The minister further stressed that the decision should not be interpreted as the government yielding to pressure from any group. Instead, he described it as a conscious and responsible step taken to ensure that development projects are not imposed against the will of the people.

Despite shelving the Lumpongdeng project, Shylla confirmed that construction of the Tai Hotel at the existing Orchid Resort site will proceed as planned. This indicates that while certain proposals may be reconsidered, development in the region will continue in alignment with public approval. Additionally, the minister appealed to members of the Green Tech Foundation (GTF) to call off their hunger strike and return home, assuring that the government remains open to dialogue and engagement. The decision highlights the state government’s effort to strike a balance between development and community consent, reinforcing the importance of inclusive governance in Meghalaya.
