A new chapter in Meghalaya’s cricket journey began after Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a modern Indoor Cricket Academy at Madan Kurkalang in Ri-Bhoi district. The facility, developed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is expected to strengthen cricket training in the state and provide young players with better opportunities to grow in the sport without having to leave Meghalaya for advanced coaching and practice facilities. The academy in Meghalaya is one of six new indoor cricket centres launched across the Northeast region. Similar academies have also been set up in Rangpo in Sikkim, Doimukh in Arunachal Pradesh, Imphal in Manipur, Aizawl in Mizoram and Dimapur in Nagaland. The inauguration was held virtually during a state function in Gangtok. The launch of these academies is being seen as a major step towards improving sports infrastructure in the Northeast and creating equal opportunities for players from the region. For years, cricket lovers and young athletes in many northeastern states have struggled due to limited facilities and lack of proper infrastructure. The new academies are expected to help bridge that gap and create a stronger system for identifying and developing cricket talent. In a statement, the BCCI said the academies together form the first major high-performance cricket network spread across the Northeast. According to the board, the idea is to ensure that quality training facilities are available in different parts of the region so that young cricketers do not face difficulties in accessing professional coaching and practice infrastructure.
The cricket board also said the project reflects its long-term commitment to the growth of cricket in the Northeast after the region was brought into India’s domestic cricket structure. Over the last few years, northeastern states have slowly become part of mainstream domestic cricket competitions, and the BCCI has been trying to improve facilities to support that expansion. The indoor academies have been designed as advanced training centres with modern infrastructure. The facilities include indoor practice pitches, gymnasiums equipped with modern fitness systems, temperature-controlled swimming pools and separate administrative and training blocks. Officials believe these facilities will help players train in a more professional environment and improve their overall fitness and performance. For Meghalaya, the opening of the academy at Kurkalang carries special importance. The state has long faced difficulties in maintaining regular cricket training schedules because of its heavy rainfall and long monsoon season. Outdoor practice sessions are often interrupted for months due to continuous rain, affecting the development of players. The indoor facility is expected to solve many of these problems by allowing cricketers to train throughout the year regardless of weather conditions. The academy has been built under the Meghalaya Cricket Association, which has been working to improve cricket infrastructure in the state over the years. Local cricket officials believe the facility will help create a stronger foundation for the sport and encourage more young people to take cricket seriously.
President of the Meghalaya Cricket Association, James Sangma, who attended the inauguration event at Kurkalang, described the occasion as an important moment for cricket in the state. He said it was encouraging to interact with members of the cricket community and local residents who had supported the association over the years. He also expressed hope that the academy would help produce talented players from Meghalaya in the coming years. According to him, the facility will play an important role in nurturing young cricketers from different parts of the state and giving them a better platform to improve their skills. The project itself began as part of a wider initiative by the BCCI to strengthen cricket infrastructure in emerging regions of the country. The foundation stone for the Northeast academies was laid in May 2024 as part of an effort to build world-class cricket facilities in the region and create a structured development system for upcoming players.
