Meghalaya CM lays foundation stone for World War I memorial restoration in Tura

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction and beautification of the historic Cenotaph in Tura on November 7, marking the start of a project to honour the Garo Labour Corps who served during the First World War. The initiative aims to preserve the historical significance of the site while creating a lasting tribute to the sacrifices of the Garo community during the global conflict.

A dedicated committee, formed to oversee the site’s preservation and development, approved the final restoration plan after extensive consultations with civil society groups and prominent citizens of the Garo Hills. The project seeks to blend historical accuracy with enhanced aesthetic appeal, ensuring that the memorial stands as a beacon of heritage and remembrance for future generations.

Expressing gratitude to the descendants of the Garo Labour Corps, Chief Minister Sangma wrote on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging their presence and support during the foundation stone ceremony. He also noted that the state government would provide research assistance to historians and scholars documenting the history and contributions of the Garo Labour Corps.

The committee has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive historical document, supported by government resources, to accompany the restoration. This document will highlight the wartime experiences, challenges, and sacrifices of the Garo Labour Corps, ensuring that their legacy is formally recorded and preserved.
