Family Distances Itself from Sonam Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case

Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the widely reported Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, has been abandoned by her family, according to her elder brother. His statement came shortly after a court in the northeastern state granted her bail.

Raja Raghuvanshi, a transport businessman, went missing on May 23 last year during his honeymoon with Sonam. His mutilated body was later discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra, located in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. Following the investigation, Sonam, along with several others—including her alleged boyfriend—was arrested.

Speaking to PTI, Sonam’s elder brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, said the family has not appointed any lawyer to support her case. He claimed he learned about her bail through media reports. Although their father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, was seen in Shillong completing formalities related to her release, Govind stated that his father had gone there only due to court instructions and had already returned.

Govind emphasized that the family has decided to cut all ties with Sonam and will not allow her to return home.

His remarks come amid growing tensions, as Raja Raghuvanshi’s family has intensified criticism against Sonam’s relatives. Raja’s elder brother, Vipin, expressed fear for his life, alleging threats from Sonam and her associates, and accused her family of dishonesty and betrayal.

In response, Govind said he was “speechless” regarding Vipin’s allegations and added that Raja’s family is free to pursue legal action as they see fit.

Notably, after Sonam’s arrest in June 2025, Govind had visited Raja’s home, where he expressed deep grief and embraced the victim’s mother. At that time, he had publicly stated that his family had severed ties with Sonam and that he would seek the death penalty for her.

Sonam was arrested on June 9, 2025, in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on charges of conspiring to murder her husband.
