Catholics observe All Souls Day in Shillong

All Souls’ Day was observed on November 2, with people remembering their departed loved ones and offering prayers for their souls, seeking God’s mercy and eternal rest for them.

Explaining the significance of the day, a religious representative said November 2 is dedicated to remembering all those who have passed away. While November 1 is observed as All Saints’ Day, honouring all saints, the following day is dedicated to praying for the departed souls, particularly those believed to be undergoing purification in purgatory.

According to Christian belief, after death, souls either attain heaven, face eternal separation from God in hell, or undergo purification in purgatory before entering heaven. The representative explained that prayers, sacrifices and intentions offered by the faithful are believed to help these souls complete their purification and attain eternal rest in God’s presence.

“All Souls’ Day is a day when we remember all the departed who have gone before us and pray that, in God’s mercy, they may be granted eternal rest,” he said.

He further said that prayers for departed souls continue throughout November, which is dedicated to remembering the faithful departed and seeking God’s reward for them in the form of eternal happiness in heaven.
