Meghalaya Police arrested two persons during a late-night naka checking operation in East Jaintia Hills district and seized 30,000 explosive detonators. According to a press release issued by East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Raksania, the interception took place at around 2:30 am on May 13 at 2 Kilo in Umkiang village under the Umkiang PPP naka point. Police stopped a suspicious white Hyundai Eon bearing registration number AS-10-A-5916 that was heading towards Silchar from Meghalaya. During a thorough search of the vehicle, police recovered 30,000 explosive detonators concealed inside two carton boxes and a gunny bag. Hundreds of residents from Lapangap village, accompanied by members of various organisations from West Jaintia Hills, marched to the Additional Secretariat on Wednesday demanding that the government address their concerns. Following the protest, the government agreed to hold discussions with the demonstrators. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar invited 11 representatives of the protestors for talks to listen to their demands. Altogether 183 cases for a total amount of Rs 1.35 lakh was settled in a National Lok Adalat organised in Meghalaya High Court and all districts of the state on Saturday. A total of 625 cases were taken up during the Lok Adalat. “242 pre-litigation cases and 383 pending cases were taken up for settlement,” the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority said in a statement.

The cost of a major water supply project for Shillong has risen sharply, with the Meghalaya cabinet approving a revised estimate that pushes the bill from Rs 553 crore to Rs 770 crore — an increase of Rs 217 crore. The New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase I) has been in the works for some time, but the revision was necessitated by a significant change in its design.
