Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) chief and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Tuesday placed a 10-point charter before the Meghalaya Assembly, raising concerns over land, recruitment, jobs, influx, industrial projects and natural resources. During a short-duration discussion, Basaiawmoit demanded that the proposed Lumpongdeng project be scrapped and sought a white paper detailing the land involved, environmental impact, compensation, financial commitments and expected benefits to the state. He stressed that development must have the consent of affected communities. On recruitment, the VPP called for greater independence and transparency in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and District Selection Committees, along with safeguards against political interference and disclosure of examination marks. The party also opposed the extension or re-employment of retired employees and sought regularisation and timely payment for various categories of workers. On education, VPP demanded a review of qualification norms, vacancies under UGC scales and retirement benefits for teachers. The party also sought stronger protection of community and public land, improved border surveillance and a time-bound mechanism to identify illegal migrants while protecting citizens and lawful residents. Basaiawmoit further demanded cancellation of the proposed public hearing for the Shree Cement project at Lum Syrman, alleging a lack of transparency. On coal, stone and sand extraction, he called for regulated, scientific and environmentally responsible systems, restoration measures and greater benefits for the state and affected communities. The charter, he said, aims to strengthen government accountability and protect Meghalaya’s land, resources and people’s interests.
