The Union Government informed Parliament that Bharat Stage III (BS-III) petrol vehicles manufactured between April 2005 and 2016 may require the replacement of select rubber parts and gaskets when operating on E20 blended fuel. Responding to questions in the Rajya Sabha regarding the nationwide rollout of petrol containing 20% ethanol, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari cited findings from a joint study conducted by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). While reassuring motorists that the blended fuel causes no abnormal wear to metal engine components, drivability, or cold-start reliability, the minister explained that higher ethanol concentrations can accelerate the degradation of non-metallic elastomers, seals, and fuel hoses in legacy models. The government emphasized that these minor component updates can be easily addressed during routine vehicle maintenance, confirming that structural engine modifications are not required for older cars or two-wheelers.
