An awareness programme on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 was organised by the Department of Urban Affairs in Williamnagar on Thursday to sensitise stakeholders on the effective implementation of the new regulations and promote responsible waste management practices across urban local bodies and centres.
Addressing the programme, Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak highlighted the importance of proper waste management in ensuring sustainable urban development and safeguarding public health. He urged citizens and stakeholders to actively participate in maintaining cleaner surroundings and adopting environmentally responsible practices.
The minister also spoke about ongoing initiatives, including efforts to operationalise the biomedical waste incinerator, protect the Simsang River, and prevent environmental degradation through forest conservation measures.
East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Raksin P. Marak appreciated the efforts of the Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB) in promoting a cleaner and more sustainable town. He pointed out that rapid urbanisation and changing lifestyles have increased waste management challenges, with improper disposal leading to water pollution, drainage blockages, and the spread of diseases.
WMB Chief Executive Officer R. N. Sangma informed that Williamnagar generates around 12.5 tonnes of waste every day. Door-to-door waste collection currently covers eight out of the town’s ten wards, while awareness campaigns have been extended to the remaining areas.
She highlighted that source segregation of waste into four categories is mandatory under the new rules and appealed to residents to follow proper segregation practices. Participants were also informed about different waste categories and the use of colour-coded bins for efficient waste management.
