Senior BJP leader and Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai on Tuesday accused the Congress and its I.N.D.I. alliance partners of spreading what he described as “lies” and creating panic over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that the exercise was necessary to ensure that ineligible persons, including illegal immigrants, do not find their way into the voters’ list.
Reacting to the Election Commission’s recent joint press note following a meeting of the full Commission, Shullai said the statement had “conclusively proved” that allegations of differences among the Election Commissioners were misleading.
“The people of Meghalaya can see that all three Election Commissioners acted with complete, recorded consensus on every major decision,” Shullai said, while questioning the Congress over what he described as its campaign against the Election Commission.
He appealed to people in Meghalaya, where the SIR process is underway, not to fall prey to what he termed “false claims” and “malicious propaganda” surrounding the exercise.
Shullai also defended the statutory declaration associated with Form 6, arguing that its legal basis had been scrutinised by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s May 27, 2026 judgment did recognise the Election Commission’s authority to conduct an SIR and said the Commission could formulate an appropriate documentation framework, while also making clear that such authority was subject to statutory limits and had to be supported by a rational connection to the purpose of the revision.
