In a landmark moment for live entertainment in the Northeast, world-renowned comedian Russell Peters is set to perform in Shillong on Friday evening, marking the first time an international stand-up comedy act of this scale has come to the region. The show, scheduled at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture, has already been sold out, reflecting strong interest among local audiences. Organisers said the response has been overwhelming, with tickets selling out quickly days before the event. Peters, who is currently on his India tour, arrived in the city earlier in the day and spent time exploring local spots before preparing for his 6:00 PM performance. Attendees have been advised to reach the venue early to avoid last-minute rush and to enjoy food and beverage stalls set up at the venue.
Known for his observational humour and stories drawn from different cultures, Peters has performed across major venues in North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia. His decision to include Shillong as his only stop in the Northeast has been seen as a significant boost for the region’s cultural scene.Speaking about the event, organiser Jason Manners of Rockski said the show marks a new chapter for live entertainment in the city. “For the first time, audiences here are seeing a global stand-up comedy icon perform live. The response has been phenomenal,” he said. Peters also shared his excitement, saying he had heard a lot about Shillong and was enjoying the atmosphere. “It’s always special performing in a new place, especially one with such great energy,” he said.
Officials from the Meghalaya government said such events highlight the growing appeal of the state as a cultural destination. Tourism Director Brenda Pakyntein noted that hosting international artists reflects a rising demand for global entertainment experiences. Over the years, Shillong has built a strong reputation as a music and cultural hub, hosting major events like the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival and concerts by international artists. Friday’s event adds a new dimension to that identity, placing the city on the map for global stand-up comedy as well.
