NHIDCL Begins Restoration After Landslide Cuts Off Shillong–Dawki Road

A major landslide has disrupted connectivity on the Shillong–Dawki Road in Meghalaya, prompting the East Khasi Hills district administration to order the immediate closure of the stretch beyond Laitlyngkot village. The affected section at Chainage 25+200 has been completely cut off due to the landslide, rendering the road impassable.

According to an official notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, the district administration received reports confirming that vehicular movement beyond Laitlyngkot village is no longer possible. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has informed authorities that restoration and repair work is expected to take several days to complete, given the severity of the damage.

In view of public safety concerns and to prevent any untoward incidents, the administration has directed that the road from Laitlyngkot onwards remain closed to both vehicular and pedestrian movement with immediate effect and until further orders.

The Shillong–Dawki Road is a crucial route connecting key tourist and trade destinations in Meghalaya, and its closure is expected to impact daily commuters, transport operators, and tourists. Authorities have advised residents and travellers to avoid the route until restoration work is completed and normal traffic movement is restored.

The district administration has assured that necessary steps are being taken in coordination with NHIDCL to restore connectivity at the earliest while prioritising safety and structural stability of the affected stretch.
