Meghalaya tourist footfall rises as infrastructure improves over the past 8 years

Meghalaya has witnessed a rise in tourist arrivals over the past 8 years, is  reflecting the rapid Meghalaya Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira said improved road connectivity, expanding hospitality infrastructure, and the development of new tourist destinations have contributed significantly to the increase in visitors.

The minister said several tourism projects are currently underway across the state, including the development of the Sohra tourism circuit, enhancement of tourist facilities at Laitlum and Mawsmai Cave, and the construction of cultural and convention centres. He also informed that the much-awaited ropeway project is nearing completion and is expected to become a major attraction for tourists visiting the state.

Highlighting developments in the hospitality sector, the minister said Shillong, which earlier had no five-star hotels, now has premium hospitality establishments such as Shillong Marriott Hotel and Vivanta Meghalaya, Shillong. He added that the government is planning more luxury hotels across Meghalaya, including in Tura, where land has already been allotted for a new project.

He said Meghalaya is also expected to benefit from central government support for the development of world-class tourist infrastructure. Expressing optimism over the future of tourism in the state, he said the ongoing projects in Sohra, Umiam, Mawkyrwat and other regions would further attract visitors while promoting Meghalaya’s culture, traditions, and natural beauty.
