Meghalaya prepares for new top cop as LR Bishnoi bids farewell

Meghalaya is gearing up for a significant shift in leadership as Lajja Ram Bishnoi, the current Director General of Police (DGP), prepares to conclude his tenure. Bishnoi, an IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre from the 1991 batch, took charge on May 20, 2022, and is set to step down on May 19, 2024, as per an official government announcement made on May 7.

Throughout his tenure, Bishnoi has been instrumental in implementing numerous reforms aimed at strengthening the state’s police force, particularly in combating drug-related activities and enhancing overall policing efforts, with a special focus on Shillong. His initiatives have earned commendation from various quarters, laying a solid groundwork for his successor to build upon.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has recommended three potential candidates for the coveted DGP position. Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch), Ram Prasad Meena (1993 batch), and Deepak Kumar (1994 batch), all hailing from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, are under consideration. The state cabinet is expected to convene soon to finalize the appointment, subject to necessary approvals from the Election Commission due to the prevailing model code of conduct.
