Meghalaya Faces Climate Alarm as CM Warns of Food and Water Security Risks

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has expressed serious concern over the state’s sharp rainfall deficit, revealing that the region recorded more than 80 per cent below-normal rainfall in June. He warned that the situation could severely impact agriculture, water availability and rural livelihoods across the state.

Addressing a workshop on “Developing State Response for El Niño Preparedness: Strengthening Food and Water Security,” the Chief Minister described the prolonged rainfall shortfall as an “existential crisis” and stressed the need for urgent, coordinated action to address emerging climate challenges.

The workshop brought together senior officials, deputy commissioners, agricultural experts and other stakeholders to develop strategies for strengthening preparedness against El Niño while ensuring long-term food and water security. Sangma emphasised that climate change is no longer a future threat but a present reality requiring immediate response.

He urged all departments to adopt a proactive, science-based and locally adaptable approach rather than waiting for ideal conditions before implementing measures. The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming practices, particularly natural farming, which has gained national recognition in Meghalaya.

Stress was also laid on integrated water management, including investment in water conservation, spring rejuvenation, and the construction of check dams and reservoirs to address erratic rainfall patterns. Sangma further called for active community participation, involving elected representatives, traditional institutions, self-help groups and students in climate resilience efforts.

Reiterating the urgency of action, he said timely intervention today would determine the resilience of future generations and safeguard Meghalaya’s food and water security amid increasing climate uncertainty.
