The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has launched a two-day trial of advanced air purifiers in Byrnihat as part of efforts to address worsening air pollution in the industrial town. The trial, conducted at two locations on Wednesday, is aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the WARO C6, a solar-powered air purification system developed by Mumbai-based Zero Carbon Tech24 Pvt. Ltd.
The WARO C6 is designed to draw in polluted ambient air, filter harmful pollutants, and release up to 30 litres of clean air per second. According to MSPCB officials, the initial trial demonstrated a noticeable reduction in pollution levels in the immediate surroundings, suggesting that the technology could help improve local air quality.
Following a review meeting, Cabinet Minister and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun said the government is considering introducing the air purifiers as a pilot project in Byrnihat. He clarified that the machines would complement existing pollution control measures, while industries would continue to comply with all environmental regulations. MSPCB Member Secretary George H. Chyrmang noted that although industrial emissions are closely monitored, vehicular pollution remains a significant challenge that the new technology could help address.
The government has also approved the establishment of an MSPCB regional office in Byrnihat to strengthen pollution monitoring and ensure faster responses to environmental complaints. Officials believe that a combination of advanced technology, stricter enforcement, and public awareness will be essential to improving air quality in the industrial belt.
