James K Sangma set for unopposed election to Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya

National People’s Party leader and MDA-II candidate James K Sangma is set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya after he emerged as the lone candidate to file nomination papers for the June 18 election.

Scrutiny of nomination papers for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat was conducted Tuesday at the Assembly Secretariat.

Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma found James K Sangma’s papers “completely in order and accepted” them, officials said.

Sangma, who served as the state’s former home minister, filed his nomination on June 8 to contest the seat.

With no other candidate in the fray, the June 11 deadline for withdrawal of nominations will mark the final step before the election process is completed.
