Cricket Infrastructure Milestone: MCA’s Indoor Facility Ready for Inauguration

On April 28, Meghalaya is set to mark a significant milestone in its sports development journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurates the Meghalaya Cricket Association’s (MCA) new Indoor Cricket Academy at Kurkalang. This high-profile event is part of a wider, coordinated rollout of indoor stadiums across six northeastern states, reflecting a concentrated effort by the central government to bolster sports infrastructure in the region.

The state-of-the-art facility, developed with the support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is poised to revolutionize cricket training in the state. By offering a modern, climate-controlled indoor environment, the academy will enable year-round practice, effectively mitigating the challenges posed by the region’s seasonal weather conditions.

The road to completion was not without its challenges. Following construction delays experienced under previous administrations, MCA President James PK Sangma took proactive steps to bring the project to fruition. He credited the timely completion of the academy to the direct intervention of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, which helped fast-track the pending work. A crucial hurdle—the lack of reliable power connectivity—was successfully cleared when the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited expedited the process, ensuring the facility was energized within just 12 days to meet the inauguration deadline.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, MCA President James PK Sangma stated, “It is indeed a great honour to have the Prime Minister inaugurate the Indoor Cricket Academy. This will mean a great deal for our State and the Northeast collectively in boosting cricket in the region.” Sangma has invited all members and affiliates to join the ceremony at the Kurkalang site, emphasizing that this is a collective achievement for the local sporting community.

As the state prepares for the formal opening, planning for the academy’s future is already well underway. The MCA is currently working closely with internal committees, including a cricket advisory group comprising former players, to design comprehensive training and development programs. With this facility, Meghalaya hopes to provide a professional pathway for budding cricketers, turning the Kurkalang academy into a premier hub for talent development in the Northeast.
