The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has constituted a committee to address growing pollution concerns in Byrnihat’s Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP). The decision was taken during a special meeting convened by Community and Rural Development Minister and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun with officials, industry representatives and village leaders to discuss measures for improving environmental conditions in the area.
The meeting was attended by MSPCB Chairman R Nainamalai, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini, senior officials, scientists, representatives of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation Limited (MIDC), the Byrnihat Industries Association (BIA) and village leaders under the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Byrnihat Area.
During the discussion, village representatives raised concerns over pollution-related health issues, including respiratory problems, tuberculosis and foul odours allegedly caused by industrial activities. They also alleged that pollution levels reduce temporarily during official inspections after prior information is received by industries.
Responding to the concerns, MSPCB officials said the board has been actively working to control pollution and has introduced a mechanism allowing residents to submit complaints along with photographs and video evidence for quicker action against violations.
The meeting also discussed the need for a permanent MSPCB regional office in Byrnihat to ensure more effective monitoring. Sohtun assured that the proposal would be taken up with the Chief Minister.
The minister further directed authorities to investigate complaints regarding untreated waste discharge into the Umtrew River and identify the sources of foul odour in the area. Joint discussions with Assam authorities will also be considered due to the location of industries along the interstate border.
