The “Climate Festival of Life: Where the Rivers, Forests, Mountains, Coasts and Oceans Are!” officially commenced its travelling edition at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong campus, on October 5, 2026. The five-day national climate festival will continue until October 9, 2026, at the Multi-Use Convention Hall, NEHU.
The festival is organised by Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, in close collaboration with the Department of Geography, NEHU.
Designed as a youth-driven platform, the festival seeks to make the understanding of climate science engaging and accessible while highlighting the rich diversity of India’s ecosystems.
The event brings together art, culture and science to showcase the intricate connections between climate change, critical natural landscapes and human livelihoods.
Visitors can engage with student research exhibits, interactive installations and expert-led talks, providing opportunities to explore contemporary environmental issues through multiple perspectives.
The five-day programme also features guided nature walks, environmental film screenings and cultural performances, creating an immersive platform for students, educators and members of the public to engage with climate and environmental
concerns.
The festival brings together schools, colleges and local organisations from Shillong and surrounding areas, with the objective of encouraging greater environmental awareness and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among young people.
Speaking on the significance of youth participation in climate action, Prof. P. K. Ryngnga, Head, Department of Geography, NEHU, highlighted that when young people come together, they can become a powerful driving force for the urgent learning and conservation efforts needed to protect the planet.
Following its programme at NEHU, the travelling festival will continue its journey to other locations across the Northeast and different parts of India, taking its message of climate awareness, conservation and environmental stewardship to wider audiences.
North-Eastern Hill University remains committed to promoting environmental awareness, interdisciplinary learning and meaningful youth engagement towards building a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
