VPP suspends Adelbert for ‘anti-party activities’

In what can be termed a major bolt from the blue, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has suspended its sitting legislator from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, citing anti-party activities. In a letter to Nongrum, VPP vice president, Dr. Kara H. Shen, referred to a show-cause notice issued to him and stated that the party had carefully examined his response. “It is observed that your reply, rather than expressing remorse or acknowledging the concerns raised, was defensive, confrontational, and lacked any sign of regret for actions deemed detrimental to the party’s interests,” the letter read. The VPP further noted that Nongrum’s approach in responding to the notice reflected defiance of party discipline and principles, which could not be overlooked. Following thorough deliberation...

Rain, hailstorm snap trees, electric wires across Shillong

Shillong and its neighbouring areas experienced heavy rain, hailstones, and wind on Sunday afternoon, leading to the uprooting of electric wires and tree branches. The hailstorm transformed many parts of Shillong, Mawiong and Umiam into a winter wonderland with hail-clad roads and rooftops. Trees and high-tension wires snapped on the main FCI Road at Mawlai, causing power outages in many areas of Mawlai Mawroh, Nongmali, Mawlai Pata, and Kynton Massar. Restoration work was taken up immediately, with workers making attempts to restore power supply between the 11 KV Mawroh and PHE feeders from Lumjingshai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted wet weather conditions in Meghalaya over the next few days, with scattered to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty wind...

The Meghalaya High Court has instructed to set up shelter homes for street dogs in Shillong

The state government officials have been directed by the Meghalaya High Court to provide shelter houses for Shillong's homeless canines. This was in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that was filed to address the city's escalating stray dog problems, including regular dog attacks and public safety concerns. Shillong's street dogs have not been the subject of an official census, but the PIL was filed in response to the growing number of dog attacks and the lack of adequate facilities for managing the stray population. Despite the Shillong Municipal Board's attempts, a division bench led by Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh noted that nothing changed. The efforts have not been enough to eradicate the problem. One of the primary causes of the issue, according to...
