The Meghalaya government on Tuesday informed the Assembly that the financial and operational performance of Meghalaya’s power utilities has improved significantly, with MePDCL’s losses reduced to ₹35 crore in FY 2024-25.Replying during the Assembly session, Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh said Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses declined from 37.27 percent in 2018-19 to 10.76 percent in 2024-25. More than 10,293 people living with HIV are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the Meghalaya as of January 2026, with the state recording the highest number of cases in the country. The health minister Wailadmiki Shylla has announced sanctioning of Rs 25 crore for implementing the five-year targeted mission to check the alarming rise of HIV/AIDS cases in the state. Replying to a question by NPP legislator from Gambegre Mehtab Chandee A Sangma in the Assembly on Wednesday, Shylla said deaths linked to the disease over the past decade reached 749 — with East Khasi Hills accounting for 435, followed by West Jaintia Hills (123) and East Jaintia Hills (90). The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong Bill, 2026, clearing the way for the upgradation of the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong into a State University.The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held on February 24. With this approval, the proposed legislation will now move forward for further formalities as required under the law. Once granted university status, IIPH Shillong will be able to award degrees independently to students and scholars in the field of public health. At present, institutions without university status depend on affiliations or partnerships for awarding degrees. The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to expand the scope of the Judicial Enquiry Commission to examine the link between suppliers and buyers of illegal coal in the state. The direction comes in the wake of the recent mine explosion at Mynsngat-Thangsko in East Jaintia Hills district, in which 33 people lost their lives. The incident has once again brought the issue of illegal coal mining into focus. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma Monday assured the Assembly he would expedite the process of establishing a veterinary college, two fishery colleges, and a dairy college, first proposed by cabinet in 2022. “These were the three colleges which we have decided…because of the urgent need keeping in mind that large population of the state is engaging in livestock rearing,” Sangma said, responding to a question by his wife and NPP legislator of Gambegre Mehtab Chandee A Sangma on Tuesday.
