The Deputy Commissioner (Excise) of West Jaintia Hills, Abhinav Kumar Singh, IAS, has ordered the closure of liquor outlets along the Assam-Meghalaya border during the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam. All wine shops, bars, canteens, and outstills in the border areas will remain closed from 5:00 PM on April 7 until 5:00 PM on April 9, 2026. The restriction will be reimposed on May 4, 2026, the counting day, starting 5:00 PM and continuing until the completion of the counting process. The administration has directed strict enforcement of the order, with intensive checks, raids, and preventive measures to ensure compliance.The directive also covers any re-poll dates, if announced.

The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) has declared the tentative schedule of SSLC Supplementary Examination 2026 with submission of online forms starting April 14. In an official notification on Tuesday, MBoSE said the starting date for filling up forms online is April 14, while the last date is April 21. The tentative dates for the examination are from May 1 to May 8, 2026. “Candidates who were not successful in the main SSLC Examination are eligible to apply for the Supplementary Examination in all the failed subjects,” the notification said.

A minor boy lost his life in a tragic road accident near Mahari Petrol Pump in Jaiaw Langsning on Monday evening. According to sources, the boy was riding a bicycle at around 5:20 pm when he collided with a pick-up truck (ML05 AA 9263). He was rushed to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival due to severe head injuries. Police said the truck, driven by laiban Nongbri of Umiam Damsite, from Lumdiengjri towards Mawlai was entering the petrol pump when the bicycle suddenly dashed into it from the left side. The boy was reportedly riding in a rash and negligent manner. A friend accompanying him jumped off in time and sustained only minor injuries.

The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on Tuesday declared the results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination 2026, with an overall pass percentage of 86.84 per cent. This year, a total of 48,623 students appeared for the examination, out of which 42,228 candidates successfully passed. The pass percentage is slightly lower than last year’s 87.10 per cent, but officials said the overall performance trend remains stable.Among the toppers, Wangaal Lama of Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School, Shillong secured the first position with 585 marks. The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has urged the Centre to adopt a balanced approach to the proposed changes in the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), saying some provisions could affect civil society organisations and their work on the ground. In a representation sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party expressed concern over clauses that may allow authorities to take control of assets belonging to organisations whose FCRA registration is cancelled. The VPP said such provisions raise questions about due process and possible misuse. Long known for bats and adventure tourism, Meghalaya’s vast cave systems have also been found to have emerged as habitats for several species of land mammals, from giant rats and porcupines to civets, fishing cats and even bears, according to a research.The research titled “An evaluation of evidence for utilization of cave habitats by terrestrial mammals in Meghalaya” draws on over three decades of cave exploration across the state.
