The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released a ten-point manifesto assuring to empower tradtional heads, financial assistance to single mothers and regulating mining within six months if elected to power in the two autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, which are going for polls on February 21. Noted historian and academician David R Syiemlieh has been selected to receive the prestigious Padma Shri award for Literature and Education. Syiemlieh’s nomination was recently approved along with others from across the country. “I am humbled and elated to have been nominated and will be conferred the Padma Shri in March or April at Rashtrapati Bhawan,” Syiemlieh told reporters. The Meghalaya Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors’ Association (MGSPHSVA) will stage a sit-in demonstration outside the office of the Shillong Municipal Board starting Friday. The decision to demonstrate followed the expiry of a two-day deadline the association had set for the provisional Town Vending Committee (TVC) to convene a meeting to discuss their issue. The association wrote to the office of the provisional TVC to hold the meeting or face a stir. The association is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the public notice issued by the non-existent TVC and cancellation of all actions taken by it, starting from the process of claims and objections and the creation of an eligible list of hawkers and street vendors to be issued vending certificates.

Alert troops of the 172 bn Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya on Thursday apprehended six Bangladeshi nationals while they were attempting to cross over the IB to Bangladesh from East Jaintia Hills.The arrests were made during a search operation based on specific inputs.  In addition, during several other operations in East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills, a substantial haul of illegal goods was intercepted, including cattle, sugar, blankets, liquor, and other contraband items. The total value of the seized items was estimated at Rs 13.54 lakh.
