The Voice of the People Party (VPP) is yet to disclose who among its 17 election winners will become the Chief Executive Member (CEM) in the KHADC. “We will inform (you) when we take the decision,” VPP chief, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said on Monday. He said the party will wait for the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected MDCs and the election of the chairman before naming the CEM. According to him, the party does not need to stake claim to form the new Executive Committee (EC) since it already has the numbers. “We will only need to follow the procedures which are there,” he said. The Voice of the People Party (VPP) and the ruling National People's Party (NPP) have swept the ADC polls to the KHADC and JHADC, respectively. As per the latest results, the VPP has already won 17 out of 29 seats in the KHADC while the NPP has secured a win in 13 out of 29 seats in the JHADC. In JHADC, NPP bagged 13 seats, VPP with 8, Congress and UDP with three seats each, and, two independent candidates. While in KHADC, the VPP has so far won in Nongkrem, Laitumkhrah, Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Mawthadraishan, Nongstoin, Sohryngkham, Mawkynrew, Nongthymmai, Mawphlang Diengiei, Mawlai, Mylliem, Mawkyrwat, Umroi, Umsning, Mawhati and Langkyrdem.

The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya successfully intercepted six Bangladeshi nationals attempting to enter India illegally on February 23, as part of its ongoing anti-infiltration efforts. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, BSF personnel from the 4th Battalion apprehended four individuals along the international border in West Jaintia Hills district. The counting of votes started at 8 am and the results are likely to be known by noon. As counting is underway and per latest reports, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has won 3 major seats, including Laitumkhrah-Malki, Mynso-Nongjngi, and Mawlai seats and is leading in several others. Following the AdC election and prediction of a hung mandate, MPCC working president Pynshngain N. Syiem on Friday ruled out the idea of his party joining alliance with the NPP in the KHADC, citing opposition from the majority of party members and the state's populace. “As per the wishes of the majority, we would not like to work with the NPP,” Syiem, who was the Deputy CEM in the NPP-led Executive Committee in the KHADC, said after casting his votes at the Lumshyiap community hall polling station. Voting began at 7 am for 29 constituencies in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and 29 constituencies in Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), they said. Over 13 lakh tribal voters will decide the fate of 158 candidates in the KHADC election and 114 candidates in the JHADC election.
