A voluntary blood donation camp was organised at the Ziro campus of Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University (IGTAMSU) by its NSS Unit in collaboration with the Blood Centre of Gyati Takka Zonal General Hospital (GTZGH). The camp was held as part of the nationwide mega voluntary blood donation initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Led by Dr Tongbram Bidyananda Singh, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology and MLS, the camp attracted 69 community participants, including 42 women. After screening and counselling by the GTZGH medical team, 28 units of blood were collected from 16 male and 12 female donors, with no adverse reactions reported. The collection included 13 units of O-positive, six A-positive, five B-positive and four AB-positive blood. The donated units will strengthen the hospital’s emergency reserves and support patient care in Lower Subansiri district. During the screening process, 39 prospective donors were temporarily deferred, with low blood pressure and anaemia among the common reasons, while others were deferred due to recent infections, antibiotic use, low body weight, hypertension, hypothyroidism and recent vaccination. The GTZGH Blood Centre team appreciated the participation of IGTAMSU, its NSS volunteers and the donors, while both institutions expressed their intention to continue collaborating on future blood donation initiatives.
