The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) in Ahmedabad, reaffirmed its position as one of India’s most trusted cancer care institutions, emerging as a major national referral centre for treatment, research, prevention and early detection on the occasion of World Cancer Day. According to data released by the institute, GCRI recorded more than 26,810 new cancer patients in 2025, of whom over 9,140 were from outside Gujarat. Patients travelled to GCRI from several states, with the highest numbers from Madhya Pradesh (4,572), followed by Rajasthan (2,678), Uttar Pradesh (1,094), Maharashtra (279) and Bihar (288).
The foundation of the institute’s expansion is the long-term improvement of Gujarat’s healthcare system, which was started under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and continued under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s direction. GCRI is now a major national hub for cutting-edge cancer treatment. GCRI has made significant advancements in surgical oncology by introducing state-of-the-art technology such as HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) and robotic-assisted procedures. Forty HIPEC treatments for complicated abdominal tumors have been successfully completed over the last three years, while fifty robotic-assisted cancer surgeries have been completed in just six months.
Additionally, the institute has seen a significant increase in advanced diagnostic services. The number of PET-CT scans rose from 1,813 in 2021 to 6,333 in 2025, greatly improving the accuracy of cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. In 2025, GCRI had over 2.59 lakh OPD visits, reflecting the increased public trust. Over 17,800 surgeries, including 50 bone marrow transplants, 50,130 chemotherapy procedures, 5,852 radiation treatments, and more than 24.6 lakh laboratory examinations were performed by the institute during the year.
In 2025, GCRI conducted 110 community screening programs throughout Gujarat, screening more than 12,000 people with an emphasis on prevention and early detection. Over 50,000 people have been checked since the ‘No-Cost Cancer Screening OPD’ was introduced in October 2021, and 118 cancer cases have been detected early as a result. In honor of 500 cancer survivors who have been cancer-free for more than ten years, GCRI will host a felicitation ceremony on February 4 in honor of World Cancer Day 2026. This event will send a powerful message that cancer can be overcome with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
