Maharashtra after the state government announced the reservation lottery for mayoral posts on Thursday. The draw was declared in the presence of Urban Development Minister Madhuri Misal.
Under the new reservation list, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayoral post has been reserved for a woman corporator from the open category, while Pune has also been marked for the General (Women) category. The Urban Development Department said the 29 posts have been distributed across categories as Scheduled Tribes (ST) one seat, Scheduled Castes (SC) three seats, Other Backward Classes (OBC) eight seats and General (Open) 17 seats.
The lottery is expected to reshape political strategies across the state, particularly in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western Maharashtra. While the BJP has emerged as the single largest party in many civic bodies, forming power arrangements may require support from allies and local factions. The reservation outcome is also likely to intensify competition for key mayoral seats, especially in Mumbai and Pune.
