This is not the first such incident reported from Meghalaya. Similar cases in the past have highlighted the persistence of harmful superstitions, raising serious concerns about social awareness and the urgent need for stronger preventive measures.
In November 2025, 21 members of a family in Khliehshnong village in Sohra were targeted, and their home was vandalised by a mob following rumours of witchcraft. Police intervened in time, rescued the family, and arrested nine individuals.
Earlier, in October 2024, a 23-year-old man from Dolbaoara village in Purakhasia killed his uncle over similar suspicions. In another case in October 2020, an 80-year-old man was murdered by his nephews in West Khasi Hills district on allegations of practising witchcraft.
