With rain and flooding, Meghalaya is on high alert; CM Sangma is chairing an emergency meeting

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma called an emergency conference with representatives from all district administrations and pertinent departments to evaluate the situation and plan relief efforts amid the state’s continuous floods, landslides, and severe rains. For the next 24 hours, authorities have been told to stay on high alert, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone areas. Departments have been instructed to work proactively to help passengers and avoid traffic jams.

Districts will be separated into operating zones as part of the disaster management plan to facilitate better cooperation. To provide for quick response, all field officers have been instructed to remain stationed at their respective headquarters. Affected family should receive immediate aid. The urgent restoration of power in regions where the supply has been interrupted has been assigned to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). The restoration procedure will be accelerated by the deployment of additional personnel.

A senior State Disaster Management Authority official told PTI that landslides, flash floods, and power line collapses have impacted more than 1,000 people in 25 villages. According to him, the rain caused an office and a school in the Ri-Bhoi area to overflow, while flash floods damaged a number of highways in the East Khasi Hills district. He stated that Sangma has instructed the relevant departments and officials to take the required steps to lessen the situation’s impact. According to a Met Department official, the East Khasi Hills district’s Sohra and Mawsynram towns have each had more over 350 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.
