VPP Moves Quickly Following MP Syngkon’s Passing; Batskhem Myrboh to Contest Shillong Seat

The political landscape in Meghalaya is shifting as the Voice of the People Party, or VPP, moves to fill the vacuum left by the sudden passing of one of its most prominent leaders. Just yesterday, the party officially announced its candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. On March 31, the VPP State Executive Committee confirmed that Batskhem Myrboh will represent the party in the race for the Shillong parliamentary seat. The decision comes at a time of mourning for the party and the state, following the untimely death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Dr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, on February 19.

Dr. Syngkon, who was only 54 years old, passed away after collapsing during a friendly football match with friends in Mawlai Mawiong. Witnesses say the MP was active on the field when he suddenly fell. While he was rushed to the Mawiong Community Health Centre, the absence of a doctor at the facility necessitated an immediate transfer to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw. Despite the efforts of medical professionals there, he could not be revived.

The vacancy created by Dr. Syngkon’s death has necessitated a by-election. Although the Election Commission of India has yet to formally announce the specific polling schedule, the VPP is taking no chances with its preparations. By naming Myrboh early, the party leadership is signaling its intent to maintain the momentum it gained during the previous general elections.

In a statement released following the committee meeting, VPP leaders urged their members and supporters to remain united. The party has called for a collective effort to ensure a “decisive victory” for Myrboh, framing the upcoming vote as a continuation of the late MP’s legacy and the party’s vision for Meghalaya. As the state awaits the formal notification from the Election Commission, all eyes will be on how the other major players in Meghalaya respond to the VPP’s early move in what is expected to be a highly watched contest.
