Traffic curbs announced for Durga Puja in Shillong

The Office of the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police has announced a slew of traffic regulations in the state capital in view of the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations from September 28 to October 2. According to the advisory, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) will enforce restrictions on the movement of Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) towards Shillong city from September 29 to October 2, between 7 am and 11 pm daily, depending on the traffic situation.

Certain roads leading to major Puja pandals will also be declared no-entry zones for private vehicles as and when required, with diversions arranged through alternative routes. For parking, visitors have been requested to use designated parking spaces, while roadside parking has been strictly prohibited. Vehicles obstructing traffic flow will be towed to safer locations at the owners’ risk and cost.

The advisory further stated that traffic police will conduct checks across strategic locations to curb rash and negligent driving, speeding, drunk driving and other Motor Vehicles Act violations. The public has also been urged to follow safety instructions, including walking to pandals where possible to ease congestion, avoiding overcrowding and adhering to directions from the district administration and police. People have also been advised to dial 112 in case of emergencies.
